How to change iTunes device backups storage location in Windows

Recently I noticed the Windows partition on my Windows Home Server was running critically low on space. Given that I store most of my data on separate drives and partitions, I thought this was a curious problem to suddenly run into.

One use of my Windows Home Server is to use it as an always-on iTunes server that stores all my content, and serves it on-demand to my Apple TVs, iPhone, iPad and computers. All of my iOS devices sync to the iTunes server. It was when I connected my iPad to the Windows Home Server and it complained that it was unable to save my iPad backup to the computer that I suddenly realised where all my C: partition space had gone. iOS device backups. How to manually delete backups on Windows Home Server 2011

Backups were broken on my Windows Home Server recently. To cut a long story short, the automated tools were not clearing out old unneeded data, and space on my backup drive was running critically low.

I tried deleting the old backups I no longer wanted from Dashboard but no space was being freed up. I tried manually running the cleanup tools multiple times but over 1 terabyte of space was still not freed up after the process had finished.

So I finally relented and decided it was time to rebuild my backups from scratch. Here’s how I did it:

How to fix cannot connect the computer to the server because either another software installation is in progress…

On some Windows client machines, you may receive the following error message when you attempt to install the connector software for your Windows Home Server:

“Cannot connect the computer to the server because either another software installation is in progress, or, the computer has a restart pending. Either complete the installation process, or, restart the computer and try to connect again.”

Even after multiple restarts and software update checks the error may still persist. The fix requires an edit of the Windows registry as follows:

Windows Home Server 2011 available on TechNet and MSDN now

Microsoft has announced that the final RTM (Ready-To-Manufacture) build of Windows Home Server 2011 is available for download now to all TechNet and MSDN subscribers.

The download gives subscribers the chance to evaluate and test the final code before the software becomes available for purchase later this month.

Information about an exciting interactive evaluation is promised soon for users interested in taking Windows Home Server 2011 for a spin. Microsoft is also expected to release a time-limited downloadable evaluation in the near future too.

Windows Home Server 2011 hits RTM; available on MSDN/TechNet soon
