Sky hopes internet TV will fuel future growth

It sounds as though the arrival of a slew of IPTV players in the UK market has finally woken BSkyB up to the threat of facing some serious competition at last.

The company rapidly secured a dominant position in the pay television market since it launched it’s digital satellite television service more than two decades ago. Today it enjoys the broadcasting rights to the most prestigious sporting events, a wide range of exclusives with all the major Hollywood studios, and a lock on the most attractive television shows. The best its competitors can do is enter into licensing deals with the company to rebroadcast Sky channels across their own platforms.

But the times they are a-changin – maybe.

Best devices for online streaming and catchup TV in the UK

With the UK launch of Netflix, I thought it would be interesting to take a quick look at the best devices to bring Catchup TV, Video on Demand, and online streaming into your home.

I’m focusing on what I know and that is Xbox, Playstation, AppleTV, iOS devices and Sony TV. I’m aware there are other dedicated streaming devices you can buy such as Boxee that do a similar (or better job) than these devices. I personally prefer multi-purpose devices to try and reduce living room clutter. I’m also comparing which devices are capable of streaming content from: 4oD (Channel 4 On Demand), BBC iPlayer, Demand 5, ITV Player, LoveFilm, Netflix, Sky Go, and finally YouTube. These are the most popular and important broadcasters and providers in the UK.

Netflix launches in the UK at last

Online streaming giant Netflix finally launched in the UK this past weekend, offering customers a limited range of Movies, Television Shows and Documentaries for unlimited viewing at £5.99 a month.

After year’s of hearing friends talk enthusiastically about the service in the States, it’s good to see its arrival on these shores. At the very least, the increased competition has already driven their established local rival LoveFilm to aggressively pursue new deals with the likes of Sony for the rights to stream content out to customers. LoveFilm has also launched a rebranded streaming only package labelled “LoveFilm Instant”, and undercut their new rivals by charging just £4.99 a month for a limited time. The battle is on.
