iOS 6.1.3 released

iOS 6.1.3 is available now directly from your device using Software Update, or you can obtain it using iTunes sync. The changes are:

  • Fixes a bug that could allow someone to bypass the passcode and access the Phone app.
  • Improvements to Maps in Japan.

Not very exciting but the passcode bypass fix is a big one for me.

iTunes could not copy “track” to the iPod because the file could not be converted

I have an iPod Nano I was trying to load up with some favourite tracks from artists I like. The Nano only has 16GB of storage, and I’m using about a third of that space already to manage podcasts. So I’m using the iTunes option to “Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps” AAC to get as many songs on the device as possible.

This worked well for all but three of the tracks in my library where I was presented with the cryptic error message:

iTunes could not copy “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” to the iPod because the file could not be converted

A reality check about Apple customer service

Seattle Rex writes about being forced to take Apple to court to in order to get the company to honour a commitment to replace a known defect in its laptops. This whole sobering tale is especially essential reading for anyone who naively believes Apple customer service can do no wrong, and will always be there to put a bad situation right:

A few years ago, Apple sold me a $4,000 computer with a defective graphics chip/logic board. The defective part was the Nvidia 8600M GT GPU, and when it was discovered that the machine was defective, Apple refused to take it back and issue me a refund. Instead, they promised to replace the 8600M GT boards when they failed, up to 4 years from the date of purchase. Read the rest of this entry »

Am I infected by the Flashback Trojan?

John C. Welch (one third of the Angry Mac Bastards podcast) has put together a simple script you can use to check if your Mac is infected by the Flashback Trojan:

Note, this is a very simple script. If your home directory path isn’t /Users/<shortusername>/ you’ll get false positives. But if you’re astute enough to have network homes and homes on random volumes, etc., you’re astute enough to run the F-Secure check without my help.

The recently discovered Flashback Trojan takes advantage of vulnerabilities found in Java on OS X. Apple released an update this week to patch the issue. If you haven’t already, run Software Update now on your Mac and get yourself patched.

Trojan-Downloader:OSX/Flashback.K connects to a remote site to download its payload; on successful infection, the malware modifies targeted webpages displayed in the web browser.

It has been claimed that more than 500,000 Mac users have been infected with this trojan. But I have yet to find it on any of these machines I manage, and neither have any of my friends, colleagues, or people I follow on social networking sites.

The crazy value of Apple II

Less than two months have passed since my “the crazy value of Apple” post. iPad (3rd Generation) has launched, iPhone sales continue to impress, Apple announced plans to start paying dividends to shareholders, and the Cupertino company is rumoured to be soon refreshing their Mac product line with new processors and some slimmed down professional laptops. The result:

$493.17 to $633.68 in less than two months. That’s stunning performance.
